A Scalp-Care Routine for Protective Styles

Protective styles only protect your hair if your scalp stays healthy underneath. Here's the exact five-step routine we recommend to every client leaving the chair.

Step 1 — Cleanse weekly. Use a diluted shampoo in an applicator bottle and focus only on the scalp. Massage with the pads of your fingers, never your nails.

Step 2 — Moisturize the scalp, not the braids. A lightweight scalp oil (tea tree, peppermint, or rosemary) applied two to three times a week keeps the skin balanced and reduces itch.

Step 3 — Refresh the braids separately. A water-based leave-in spray on the braids themselves keeps them soft without weighing them down.

Step 4 — Protect at night. Silk or satin only — bonnet, scarf, or pillowcase. This single habit changes everything.

Step 5 — Know when to take them out. Six to eight weeks is the sweet spot. Pushing past ten weeks invites matting and breakage at the new growth.
